Building a Lower-Tox Nursery: Our Family’s Honest Recommendations

Building a Lower-Tox Nursery: Our Family’s Honest Recommendations

When we became parents, we wanted to make the healthiest choices we could for our children. Like many new parents, we quickly realized there were thousands of products on the market—and everyone claimed theirs was the best.

Over the years, we’ve made gradual changes. Some were easy. Others took time, research, trial and error, and plenty of learning along the way.

Everything on this list is something we’ve personally used in our home or genuinely recommend based on our family’s experience. These aren’t sponsored recommendations—they’re products that earned a permanent place in our daily lives.

Progress Over Perfection

Our goal has never been perfection.

Our goal has always been to make better choices when we could.

Some swaps happen overnight. Others take months or even years.

If you’re just starting, don’t feel like you need to replace everything at once. Small changes add up over time.

Glass Instead of Plastic

One of the first transitions we made was moving from plastic food storage and baby bottles to glass whenever practical.

Yes, glass is heavier.

Yes, it can break.

If you have a little one who loves throwing cups or bottles, silicone protective sleeves or bumpers can make glass much more practical.

For our family, it was a worthwhile transition.

Cloth vs. Disposable Diapers

We absolutely love the idea of cloth diapers.

We truly wanted them to work.

But life doesn’t always go according to plan.

Our children had more complex health needs, and between medical appointments, therapies, interrupted sleep, and simply trying to keep up with everyday life, cloth diapers weren’t sustainable for us.

We gave ourselves permission to choose what worked for our family.

That meant using disposable diapers.

There isn’t a perfect disposable diaper. Every brand has different materials, different ingredient choices, and different fits.

Our advice?

Find the cleanest option that works for your family—and don’t feel guilty if cloth isn’t realistic.

Every Baby Fits Diapers Differently

One thing we wish someone had told us:

Don’t settle for constant leaks.

We tried multiple diaper brands before finding one that fit our baby’s body well.

Some babies have chunky thighs.

Some are long and lean.

Some are heavy nighttime wetters.

The “best” diaper isn’t always the one with the highest reviews—it’s the one that fits your baby.

If you’re dealing with frequent blowouts or overnight leaks, don’t assume that’s just part of parenting. Sometimes all it takes is switching brands or trying the next size up.

Our Product Philosophy

Whenever possible, we look for products that are:

  • EWG VERIFIED® for personal care and household products

  • Fragrance-free

  • Dye-free when available

  • Organic cotton for clothing and bedding

  • Glass, stainless steel, or platinum silicone for feeding products when practical

These aren’t hard-and-fast rules. They’re simply the standards we’ve adopted over time because they align with our family’s values.

Give Yourself Grace

If there’s one thing we hope every new parent hears, it’s this:

You do not have to do everything perfectly.

Some seasons are about survival.

Some seasons allow you to make more intentional changes.

Whether you’re breastfeeding or formula feeding, using cloth or disposable diapers, buying organic everything or simply doing the best you can with your budget—you are still a wonderful parent.

Choose what works for your family.

Keep learning.

Make changes as you’re able.

Progress, not perfection, is what truly matters.
